SAMC-Institutional Ethics Committee IEC:
Sushrutha Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital , Prashanthi Kuteera, Jodi Bingipura, Jigani Hobli, Anekal Taluk, Bengaluru 560105, is an ‘A grade” Institution, affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Medical sciences, Karnataka. It complies with Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) guidelines, ICMR guidelines and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines for Ayurveda Siddha and Unani (ASU) drugs.
One of the mandates of Sushrutha Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital is to conduct biomedical and health research in various branches of Ayurveda involving the human population. The involvement of the human beings raises issues of ethics in research hence; Institutional Ethics Committee is required to be constituted in every such institute to ensure the ethical practices by the researchers.
The Director of SAMC & H, in consultation with the Principal, and Director of postgraduate studies authorised formation of Institutional Ethical Committee (IEC) for Biomedical and Health Research in the year 2020. The committee was formulated following ICMR & CCRAS guidelines and the chairperson and all the committee members were appointed based on their competence, experience and integrity. Since then the committee is regularly meeting for assessing the research projects requiring ethical Clearance.
Presently the committee has following Non-affiliated and affiliated members working in different capacities.
SAMC & H-IEC follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which were prepared to facilitate smooth functioning of IEC. The purpose of these SOPs is to provide clear, unambiguous instructions to conduct activities of the IEC in accordance with the ICMR guidelines 2006, Schedule ‘Y” (Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940: Amendment 20th Jan 2005), WHO Operating Guidelines for Ethical Review Committee that Review Biomedical Research, and ICH (International Conference on Harmonization) Good Clinical Practice (GCP), CCRAS guidelines series 3, 2018, to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of human participants in biomedical, experimental and behavioural research conducted at SAMC & H, Bengaluru.
SAMC & H-IEC regular meetings are organized minimum two times in a year and as and when required to assess PG synopses, Faculty research proposals, and students research proposals submitted by faculty and students of SAMC & H. The services of SAMC & H-IEC are available for external applicants also for a minimal fee.
